Challenge
We got a call from our friend at Airbnb saying a project with an impossible timeline was coming; he had to ask us but he was clear that we were welcome to say no.
Challenge Accepted!
Implementation
Airbnb and their AOR, Chiat/Day needed to get something up for the holidays; they ran out of time and didn't have any great ideas that could be executed in such a short window of time.
Airbnb and Chiat/Day came up with the concept; Airbnb needed Chiat to work with Martian because we knew how Airbnb's deployment process worked.
We had less than 2 weeks to do UX, Design and Development.
The app needed to capture camera/camera roll images, overlay one of a dozen custom filters on top, upload the image to a custom url and then be able to share the image on facebook/twitter, as well as be downloadable.
We used web technologies for the front end. The app allowed image uploading, cropping, custom filter overlays, and url sharing and image download all within the browser, without having to download an app.
The filter compositing happened on the server using ImageMagick and we hosted the whole thing on AWS.

We built the app to post to facebook via a link share. The app was mobile-only, but we realized that the shared content needed to be viewable on desktop so we had to build out some exceptions.

Result
The site was live before the Thanksgiving Break at https://holidays.withairbnb.com/ (no longer functional).
We had a ton of fun on this project, one of many we built with Airbnb.
